Dear Students,

Toward the end of the colonial period, a promising Korean poet depicted his youth in the following way:

For twenty-three years it is the wind that has raised four-fifths of me
The world has yielded only shame and more shame.

To the 23-year old poet, it was "the wind" instead of his parents that filled his inner vacancy. He closes the poem with a feeling of loss and ignorance:

And I have come this far panting
Like a heated dog with his tongue hanging out
In the sun and in the shade

Things have changed a lot, and I am proud to say that Korea is unique in achieving two successes at the same time: democratization and economic growth. It may be the only country outside North America, Japan, and Europe that has some of its corporations listed among the largest 200 transnational corporations. Korean people have also struggled to realize an advanced form of democracy. This combination of economic growth with political democratization is very unique and hardly seen in other developing countries.
The 2010 Hallym International Summer Program is an integrative approach that provides more information about Korean history, society, culture, language, and customs. While our highly qualified experts teach a variety of courses, we will also take you to a number of Korea¡¯s most famous natural, historical and contemporary sites, to help you put the things you learn into context, accompanied by Hallym University student colleagues. Studying, traveling, and living side by side with participants from various parts of the world will offer you the opportunity to bridge an array of different cultures and foster deep and lasting relationships.

Best wishes
